10 Most Common Types of Crystals | And What They’re Used For

Kate Hudson once said that on her bedside table was a bowl of rose quartz crystals that her mother, Goldie Hawn, gave her for Mother’s Day.

Hudson is one of many celebrities who publicly swear by the mystical healing powers of crystals. Gisele Bundchen made her husband, quarterback Tom Brady, wear “guard stones” ahead of the 2019 Super Bowl. On the set of the thriller Down a Dark Hall, Uma Thurman always carried “grounding” crystals in his pocket. Lizzo displayed three geodes from her impressive collection at David Letterman’s new 2020 show. Adele has held crystals at concerts to combat stage fright.

Sure, there are crystals in there, but they’re not new. According to Stanford scholar Marisa Gálvez, crystals have been mentioned throughout history, from the texts of the Roman historian Pliny the Elder (who lived from 2379) to medieval poetry. “In the Middle Ages, people thought crystals would bring a spiritual presence,” Galvez told Stanford News. “People were hungry to have something physical that embodied faith and spirituality.”

Below I’ve rounded up some of the most common types of crystals for beginners, along with a guide on how to unlock their properties – each of the stones on this list has a different meaning and, according to believers, fills a specific need. The crystal for manifesting love, for example, is by far rose quartz. If you have some adversaries, protect yourself with black tourmaline.

You don’t have to be an expert on crystals to channel their inherent energy. But after reading this article, you’re well on your way to becoming a pro. Here’s where to start with your crystal collection and how to take care of your new geodes afterward.

Amethyst

This is one of the most popular crystals for a reason. The magnificent and versatile powers of purple crystal are said to range from calming anxiety to ensuring a good night’s sleep. Because amethyst targets the crown chakra (located at the top of the head and aligned with the spirit), the crystal works to induce a sense of physical and emotional calm. Its specific healing properties include relieving headaches and migraines, relieving pain, and enhancing intuition. Many believe that placing an amethyst geode next to their bed will calm their mind and bring them pleasant dreams.

Selenite

Do you ever feel exhausted? It may be time for an aura cleanse (plus another cup of coffee and some self-care). Selenite is the best crystal for rejuvenating the auric field around us. The crystal is said to cleanse the accumulated bad vibes of the day and envelop you in a more peaceful flow of energy. Use selenite like a magic wand around your body to clear any energetic obstacles standing in the way of achieving inner serenity. Caution: Selenite dissolves in water, so keep the geode in a dry place.

Citrine

Citrine, a light yellow variety of quartz, is said to help those feeling stuck. For an instant confidence boost, I suggest placing citrine in your abdominal or solar plexus chakra while you rest. The crystal will supposedly untie the energy knotted within and restore good vibes.

Jade

We could all use a little more luck in our lives, which is what makes jade so popular: it’s a wearable good luck charm. Jade is believed to bring abundance and prosperity in the material (think dollar signs) and social realms. Wearing jade on the left hand or wrist is believed to help bring blessings from the universe. Alternatively, jade rings are also very stylish.

Known as the “master” crystal, clear quartz is all about deadening internal noise and clarifying your goals. The popular geode is said to have universal healing powers. Place your new clear quartz by the window to absorb the sun’s energy, which in turn will be transmitted to you, potentially dissipating the bad.

When meditating (or just sitting), place Chrysocolla on any of your chakras, or energy points in your body, to reactivate them and help them perform at their best.

How to use your crystals?

First, there are the basics: meditate with crystals; place them in appropriate places in your home; keep them under your pillow; Put them in your bag to heal them on the go.

But you can also be creative. My favorite way to use my crystals is to take a “moon bath” with them. All of the crystals listed above can be used in the bath, with the exception of selenite which is water-soluble. Place one or more crystals in your bathroom when the moon is full and manifest your wishes: dream big!

For a highly potent beverage, add Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and Clear Quartz to a pitcher of water and literally absorb the properties. Alternatively, you can purchase a bottle of water that includes glass.

Last but not least, you can wear colored crystals as jewelry.

Take care of your crystals

There’s a catch: once you start using crystals, you need to purify them. If you don’t do this, the energy absorbed by the crystal can be transferred back to you, like a chaotic game of tag. The following methods restore the vitality and energy of the crystals.

  1. Selenite, the expert aura cleanser, can be used to cleanse crystals, too. Wave the selenite wand around your crystals.
  2. Give ‘em a salt bath. Place your collection in a bowl of Himalayan salt water for 48 hours to rid the crystals of their accrued energy.
  3. Now that you’re a crystal owner, pay extra close attention to the lunar calendar. During new moons and full moons, “charge” crystals by placing them in the window.
  4. Burning sage or palo santo smudge sticks will get rid of any energetic debris (and make your room smell delectable).
  5. Finally, certain crystals call for certain routines. Place black tourmaline in a bowl of brown rice to draw out the negativity it absorbed.
