In six months, Apple will introduce its new 2022 smartphone line-up. This is what the Apple iPhone 14 Pro will look like and these will be the new features.

The iPhone SE 2022 has been officially introduced, many Apple fans are looking forward to autumn. Around September 2022, Apple will introduce the iPhone 14 models, as successors to the popular iPhone 13 line-up. Four more models are expected. However, something will change this year. Instead of a mini variant, an iPhone 14 Max is expected this time – as a large variant (6.7”) of the base model (6.1”). In addition, Apple will also release a Pro and a Pro Max model.

The iPhone 13 Pro has a similar design to its predecessor. It has now become clear that the two iPhone 14 Pro models will receive an updated design, in which the lack of the characteristic notch is the most striking. With the 13 Pro, the notch has already been made about 20% smaller, this time Apple will opt for a different solution.

Recently, there have been several sources that talk about the integration of a punch-hole camera. Various CAD renders have now also appeared online, showing exactly what the new front camera with Face ID will look like. Based on all the information already available, graphic designer Parvez Khan, aka Technizo Concept, has created a series of product renders for LetsGoDigital of the alleged Apple iPhone 14 Pro.

The screen edges are narrow and symmetrical on all four sides. That gives the phone an extra elegant look. Instead of a wide black notch, Apple this time opts for two punched holes in which both the front camera and the sensors for Face ID are processed. The single hole offers space for the FaceTime selfie camera, the pill-shaped hole serves for facial recognition technology.

Apple has been providing its top models with a notch since the iPhone X in 2017. With Apple saying goodbye to the controversial notch after 5 years, many are looking forward to the new design. Finally, it also provides extra distinctiveness compared to all iPhones already available. The iPhone 14 (Max) will also have an ‘old-fashioned’ notch. Only the Pro models get the new design.

There are rumours that the iPhone 15 Pro expected next year will have a single punch-hole camera. By then, Apple would like to incorporate the Face ID sensors below the display, using Samsung’s under-panel camera technology. In the long run, the camera will also disappear under the display. However, it is not there yet. With the 14 Pro, the company clearly opts for an intermediate solution.

Apple has also been working on a fingerprint sensor that is placed under the screen for some time – as we have known from Android phones for years. The well-known Touch ID functionality disappeared when Apple decided to omit the home button from the iPhone X. Since then, the company has focused on 3D face detection. With the iPhone 14 Pro, this again seems to be the main method of unlocking. The under-display fingerprint scanner does not appear to be introduced until 2023.

As for the screen size, the iPhone 14 Pro will again be equipped with a 6.1” OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate (also called Pro Motion Display). Even with the larger Pro Max, the 6.7” display size remains unchanged. This means that the two Pro models will have the same screen size as the two basic models – that is for the first time.

iPhone 14 Pro A16 Bionic SoC

Apple this time seems to want to make yet another change to highlight the difference between the base and Pro models. Previously, Apple has always chosen to apply the same chipset to all four models. For example, the entire iPhone 13 series is equipped with the A15 Bionic SoC. This year, however, the American manufacturer seems to have a different strategy.

iPhone 14 Pro A16 Bionic SoC

Ming-Chi Kuo reports on Twitter that only the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) will be equipped with the new and extremely powerful A16 Bionic chip. The non-Pro models will receive the already available A15 chip. That means that the iPhone 14 (Max) will be less powerful than the Pro models. Despite this, the A15 Bionic is still one of the most powerful chipsets at the moment. It, therefore, appears to be primarily a strategic decision. In this way, the names come into their own much better: Pro = extra powerful and Max = extra large.

There will also be differences in the area of memory. It will probably apply to all four models that 6GB of RAM will be built in as standard. However, the Pro and Pro Max are equipped with the extra fast LPDDR 5, while the basic models have to make do with LPDDR 4 memory. There is also a small chance that the Pro models will be equipped with 8GB RAM this time.

Updated triple camera with 48MP image sensor

Apple will offer different memory variants. 128GB of storage is built-in as standard. In addition, a 256GB, a 512GB variant and a 1TB variant will be made available – just like the current top models. According to some rumours, a 2TB variant is also in the works this time. Personally, I do not expect this – after all, the 1TB variant is already €580 more expensive than the base model. An extra terabyte will undoubtedly push the sales price well above €2,000.

Updated triple camera with 48MP image sensor

The necessary changes will not only be made at the front but a number of clear differences can also be observed at the rear. We are of course talking about the camera design.

Although the triangular lens arrangement remains the same, the camera system is considerably larger and also somewhat thicker than before. This also indicates that Apple will provide the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) with new camera sensors and lenses – which should undoubtedly offer even better image quality.

Rumours have been circulating for some time that Apple will provide its new top models with a 48-megapixel main camera. That would be quite an upgrade compared to the 12MP camera that is currently used.

In recent years, Apple has mainly focused on the application of larger image sensors, bright lenses and software optimizations. This time, the resolution also seems to make a big leap forward. Presumably, this is decided to also make 8K video recordings possible. Current iPhone models support 4K video @ 60fps. Many competing brands now also offer 8K video support.

In addition, the American manufacturer would like to use pixel-binning technology for the first time – in which the data from 4 pixels are combined into 1 pixel. This allows you to shoot 12MP photos with much more detail and less noise – making this technology ideal even when shooting in poor lighting conditions.

As for the other two cameras, presumably, the 12MP ultra-wide camera and the 12MP telephoto camera will remain. Next year, Apple seems to want to replace the telephoto camera with a periscopic zoom camera. However, this technology will not yet be found in the iPhone 14 Pro, for this, we have to be patient until the iPhone 15 Pro (Max).

Presumably, the zoom range of the iPhone 14 Pro will be the same as its predecessor, which amounts to 3x optical zoom and 9x digital zoom. This allows you to effortlessly bring subjects closer, and then capture them in full sharpness.

Macro photography from 2 cm away will also be possible again. This function also works when capturing video recordings. Night mode will also be available no matter which lens you prefer.

The iPhone 14 Pro gets even more powerful hardware, a new design and a better camera. Of course, the software will also be updated. It concerns iOS 16 – as a successor to the current iOS 15. Although the new operating system has not yet been officially introduced by Apple, there have been several rumours.

Apple seems to be planning to update the lock screen, including changes to the font. The app icons also get a new look – more in line with macOS. It is also expected that Apple will update the notifications with smarter ‘Siri Reply Suggestions’ and the interactive widgets are also expected to receive an upgrade.

The iPhone 14 Pro may also be equipped with an Always-On Display – as the company already uses with the Apple Watch Series 7. This allows you to see general information, such as the time and date, without having to unlock the device. Many Android phones already offer this feature, but it is an energy-consuming function

iPhone 14 Pro Battery & Fast Charging

This brings us to the next point: the battery. The current iPhone 13 Pro is equipped with a 3,095 mAh battery – which is considerably larger than the 2,815 mAh battery of its predecessor. As a result, the 13 Pro delivers good battery life: up to 22 hours of video playback and up to 20 hours of video streaming. In practice you can with average use about a day and a half ahead before you have to put the smartphone back on the charger.

iPhone 14 Pro Battery & Fast Charging

Although the Pro model has the same screen size and battery capacity as the base model, this device does deliver a better battery life thanks to the LTPO display technology. Chances are the iPhone 14 Pro will deliver just as long battery life.

Hopefully, the loading speed will be increased. The current Pro model is characterized by a maximum charging speed of 20W. Samsung’s current flagship model, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, supports 45W fast charging, which is a significant upgrade over its 25W-supported predecessor.

Presumably, Apple will also increase the charging speed. Nevertheless, it seems to be a smaller jump. Some time ago there were rumours that a new 30W charger from Apple is in the making, possibly intended for the iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

The new iPhone models also seem to have a Lightning connection again – instead of USB Type-C, as most smartphone brands use. Apple does include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the sales box as standard. However, a charger is not included as standard, you have to buy it as a separate accessory.

Wireless charging will of course also be an option. The current MagSafe charger with a magnetic connection offers support for 15W wireless charging. This accessory is available for €45. Qi-certified wireless chargers can also be used. If you opt for wireless charging, you can simply leave the Apple phone cases in place while charging. So handy.

Apple usually introduces its new iPhone lineup in September. There are currently no reasons to believe that this will change in 2022. Undoubtedly, a major event will be organized to introduce the new iPhone 14 series. This is probably the first or second week of September. Usually, Apple chooses an introduction on Tuesday, after which the pre-order period starts the following Friday. The presale usually lasts a week, after which the official release takes place.

Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro will be released in a range of fresh colours. Details about this are still scarce, although there has been talking of a rose gold variant for some time. In addition, it is obvious that a grey and silver model will also be released. Presumably, there will also be the fourth variant. In the long run, a fifth variant may also be added – for example, Apple recently released an Alphengreen iPhone 13 Pro.

Little information is known about the price at the moment. In recent years, Apple has managed to put the new models on the market for the same price every time. For example, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro both received a suggested retail price of €1,160. For this, you receive the basic model with 128GB memory. In addition, there is a choice of 256GB and 512GB. Since the 13 Pro, you can also choose 1TB of memory.

This year, however, bigger upgrades are expected – from a new design to a higher-resolution main camera. There is therefore a real chance that this will have an impact on the selling price. However, we do not expect major differences in price. More details about the iPhone 14 series will undoubtedly be announced in the coming weeks and months, we will keep an eye on the developments for you!

The CAD-based renders of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro are created by graphic designer Parvez Khan – aka Technizo Concept . This product is not (yet) for sale.
