The Samsung Galaxy S22 is a relatively compact and powerful smartphone. How does this phone compare to its predecessor, the Galaxy S21?

Since this month, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is available in the Netherlands. The smartphone is available in a range of fresh colors, starting at €850 (8GB/128GB). It is the successor to the one year older Galaxy S21. In terms of design, the new model is very similar to its predecessor. Internally, however, this advanced smartphone has been renewed and improved on many points. In this publication, we take a closer look at the differences between the Galaxy S22 and S21.

Samsung has provided the new S-series model with a slightly smaller screen, with a slightly different screen ratio. The necessary changes have also been made to the triple-camera system. In addition, the chipset has been renewed, as has the software. Finally, the battery capacity has also changed. We go through these parts one by one.

The smaller screen and better camera

To start with the display. The Samsung Galaxy S22 has a 6.1” AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 screen ratio. Which is slightly smaller than the 6.2” screen of its predecessor. The screen ratio is also slightly different (20:9), so the new model is slightly shorter in proportion. This benefits the hand position, especially for those who have relatively small hands.

The smaller screen and better camera

In addition to the smaller display, the frame has also been renewed. It is an extra-strong and durable ‘Armor Aluminum’ frame. Gorilla Glass Victus+ is used for the glass front and back panel. That makes the S22 stronger and more scratch-resistant than its predecessor.

The rear camera system has also been updated. The Samsung S22 features a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The wide-angle camera and the zoom camera have both been renewed. Although the resolution of the telephoto camera has been reduced (64MP vs 10MP), it does deliver better zoom performance.

Exynos 2200 and Android 12

As every year, Samsung has also renewed the chipset and the software. The European Galaxy S22 models run on the new Samsung Exynos 2200 SoC. This processor is baked according to the 4nm process. It is also the first Exynos chip with an AMD GPU, which should provide console-quality graphics on your smartphone.

The Samsung S22 runs on Android 12 in combination with the One UI 4.1 user interface. Not only has the software been updated, but the number of years that you can expect updates has also been extended. The S22 models are guaranteed 4 years of Android OS updates and 5 years of security updates. Samsung is ahead of all other Android smartphone manufacturers with this.

Partly due to the smaller screen, Samsung has decided to reduce the battery capacity. Where the Galaxy S21 is equipped with a 4,000 mAh battery, the S22 is equipped with a 3,700 mAh battery. Unfortunately, this also results in a slightly shorter battery life, as various expert reviews have now shown. This is actually the only part in which the S22 scores less than its predecessor.
