What determines the choice of a router

A Wi-Fi router is considered a technically complex product. His choice depends on the following factors:
- The purpose of the device and the conditions for its further operation;
- The existing data transfer rate over the network (set by the provider);
- The presence of obstacles in the room (walls, furniture, etc.);
- The number of individual devices that will connect to the Internet;
- Router selling price.

Technical parameters of choice
Modern Wi-Fi routers require a lot of computing power, for which two of its key components are responsible: the processor and RAM.
Routers with single-core processors can no longer cope with most daily tasks. For example, to handle multiple network clients, you need at least a dual-core brick. And even though a device with a frequency of 900 MHz has a lower power level than its counterpart with an indicator of 1.2 GHz, the number of cores remains a priority. Therefore, a router with a large number of cores works more efficiently.
The size of the RAM of the router for today should be at least 128 MB. This is the lowest numerical threshold. The most optimal size is 256 MB. With such an indicator, the data processing speed of the device itself will be quite fast. Of course, if the budget allows, a wireless device with 1 GB of RAM is ideal.
Routers today are better to choose dual-band. This means that the router transmits a signal wirelessly at two frequencies. Accordingly, the device can be tri-band or more.
Modern Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers use the 2.4 GHz frequency band. It is compatible with older wireless standards like Wi-Fi 4 and newer ones like Wi-Fi 6.
Compatibility with legacy network equipment and a large coverage area in the 2.4 GHz band is definitely considered an advantage. Channel congestion can be a problem in apartment buildings where everyone has Wi-Fi operating in the 2.4 GHz band.
Dual-band and tri-band routers also use 5 Hz. It’s faster than the previous band and takes advantage of the latest Wi-Fi standards (802.11ac and Wi-Fi 6 for maximum 802.11ax performance). It is less congested, as the 5 GHz band is used less often and has a small coverage area.
The advantage of a dual-band router (or more) is the ability to connect to Wi-Fi with separate network names and passwords, where two or more standards will be used.
Relationship with provider
Almost all modern routers work with any ISP. But still, you should check compatibility beforehand to make sure.
Then you need to determine the ability of the router to maintain the Internet speed provided by the provider. It is advisable to choose a router that provides a higher speed than that set by the tariff. When connecting multiple devices, this approach will be optimal.
Models of modern Wi-Fi routers provide speed on each of the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Since devices generally don’t use every network frequency at the same time, the overall speed is most likely incorrect. Therefore, you need to check the maximum speed of the router in these ranges.
Note that Wi-Fi performance slows down when they travel over the air. Reduces the speed of the wireless network and the presence of solid objects: walls, cabinets, partitions, floors between floors, etc.
Today, we recommend choosing a router that supports the latest wireless protocols. In other words, this is the Wi-Fi standard that is responsible for the device’s bandwidth level and range.
Some of these standards are:

- 11ac (Wi-Fi 5) – exists on many routers and supports connections at speeds up to 3.5 Gb/s.
- 11ax (Wi-Fi 6) is the latest standard used to provide speeds up to 10 Gbps.
Note that today most digital devices and Internet connections do not support Wi-Fi 6. Therefore, do not rush to switch to this protocol.
To protect the local network, some modern Wi-Fi routers have a number of additional features. These may be:
- VPN servers;
- Antivirus ;
- Other security settings.
Some models of modern routers are equipped with these options at the manufacturing stage. But here it must be borne in mind that when working with inexpensive equipment, it will not be possible to use these advanced features. For these purposes, it is better to use more expensive and high-quality devices.
