Screen diagonal

Gaming monitors usually start at 24 inches. In general, this is not a very high figure, as it might seem at first glance – it will not take up much space. If you’re sitting close enough to the screen, then 24 inches is fine. A 27-inch monitor may also be considered if space at the desk is not limited.

When buying a monitor, the rule applies: “the larger the diagonal, the farther you need to be from the screen.” This is required in order to cover the entire image on the display with one glance. Therefore, it is important to understand whether there are resources for this, i.e. – the possibility of location from the monitor at a great distance. Because if there is not enough working space for viewing on the overall screen, this will force you to constantly turn your head in order to follow the characters and the situation in the game. Such actions are not very convenient and will quickly lead to fatigue, and pain in the neck and back.

Aspect Ratio

Most modern monitors have an aspect ratio of 16:9. This means that for every 16 parts of the width, there are 9 parts of the screen height. But there are also 21:9 and 32:9 widescreen and ultra widescreen models on the market.

Note that increasing the horizontal field of view expands the angle of view in games. This gives the gamer a certain advantage, which is especially important in first and third-person shooters. Along the edges of a monitor with an aspect ratio of 32:9, you can see something that is not visible on a standard 16:9 screen and remains behind the scenes. The wider screen allows the player to immediately see opponents who hide in side corners and think they are out of the line of sight.

Permission

A higher screen resolution allows you to perceive a picture with a more detailed image. Monitors with sizes up to 24 inches are able to perfectly cope with their gaming tasks at a resolution of Full HD 1920×1080 pixels. If the player is at a great distance from the screen, then he will not notice individual pixels at all.

Accordingly, the larger the screen diagonal, the higher the resolution should be. For example, 1920×1080 resolution will not be enough for 27-inch monitors. Of course, the choice always depends on the budget. If it allows, then in the 24-27 inch line it is better to purchase models with a resolution of 1440 p. – 2560×1440.

For a 4K monitor with a diagonal of 30 inches, a resolution of 3840×2160 is required.

But the high definition has a downside. The higher the resolution in games, the greater the level of load performed on the video card. Accordingly, the frame rate (FPS) will also decrease. If the PC does not handle games well at 1920×1080 resolution, then when using a 4K monitor, you will have to greatly reduce the quality of the graphics or put up with a small FPS. This will lead to the fact that comfortable and efficient gaming will simply become impossible. In this case, the best solution is to replace the video card.

Update frequency

The smoothness and naturalness of movement in games depending on the frame rate. Accordingly, the higher it is, the more realistic the picture on the screen looks.

Note that the refresh rate in games relative to PC power can be either tens or hundreds of FPS. An ordinary office monitor is not capable of rendering more than 60-75 frames per second. If a gamer uses such a model, then visually 60 FPS will not differ from 140 FPS.

To improve the smoothness of the image in games, gaming monitors have a fairly high refresh rate of 144 Hz and higher. A game screen per second displays twice as many intermediate frames as a regular office monitor. This allows you to see the movements in the game as smoothly and realistically as possible.

Matrix type

To date, in the world of gaming technology, three types of liquid crystal matrices for gaming monitors are in demand:

  1. Matrix TN. It is low cost and has a very high screen refresh rate (up to 360 Hz). TN has no competitors in this parameter. But it has a number of disadvantages: inaccurate colour reproduction, gradation of gradients, and strong distortion when looking away from the centre of the screen. If you lean back in your chair or lower / raise your head, the image will sharply lose its brightness and turn pale.
  2. IPS matrix. This type is considered the best in terms of colour reproduction of the picture and is used in professional-level monitors. The cost of gaming IPS is not very high, which characterizes its demand in the monitor market. One significant drawback of this matrix is ​​the low contrast ratio. This is due to certain features of the technology, as a result of which the black colour on IPS looks faded and dull.
  3. VA matrix. This matrix is ​​the golden mean and combines the advantages of the first two types. At the same time, it does not have any of its shortcomings. Gaming VA monitors have a refresh rate of at least 144 Hz. Modern models mostly have a frequency of 200 Hz. The contrast parameter of VA-matrices is three times higher than IPS: the black colour does not change its hue even in the dark. Colour reproduction, of course, is inferior to IPS, but far exceeds the values ​​of TN-matrices. The matrix has only one minus: black trails when objects move quickly on a white background.
